My Last Duchess Summary - eNotes.com.
Comparing Three Poems First Love, My Last Duchess and Remember Introduction I have been told to choose three poems that differ in their exploration of love. The poems what I will be writing about so I can compare them are: 'First Love', 'My last Duchess' and 'Remember'.
In Robert Browning’s works, Porphyria’s Lover, and My Last Duchess, the speakers can be both compared and contrasted. Initially, both speakers in the literary texts are similar because they killed their lovers. In Duchess, the duke that is the speaker says bluntly that he killed his last wife.
In 'My Last Duchess' the thoughts of a rather possessive and arrogant Duke of Ferrara are all shared. He expected his wife to act in a really conservative manner and wanted her to treat other people as poor. The Duke reveals his position of power in the poem by speaking to her as; 'My Last Duchess'.
However, the very opening of the poem- 'That's my last Duchess painted on the wall'- uses a demonstrative to distance the speaker of the narrative, and the reader, from the subject of the Duchess. As readers, we instantly know that depictions of the Duchess are not just literally framed as her figure is now a painting, but also framed by the control of the narrative voice.
On the contrary, “My Last Duchess” begins with dramatic suddenness: That’s my last Duchess painted on the wall. ” The readers understand that the event has begun earlier. But the poem begins somewhere in the middle of the speech giving a dramatic twist.
